Recently Vicky Williams gave generously of her time to present a wonderful, informal talk of her memories relating to early Leisure Island for U3A members and the many island residents who attended this personal 40 minute look at those early days, liberally sprinkled with fascinating facts.

Over the many years that Michael Cremer served his special style of Ala Carte meals to both visitors and residents on Leisure Island he built up a veritable brigade of ‘regulars’ from all over the world. As very experienced chef in his own right who cared deeply about his craft, he personally cooked each meal served.

Michael generously allowed access to his restaurant walls and exposed local artists to his diverse clientele resulting in many sales from this initiative. Also, once a month, Michael provided live music for his diners to enjoy and successful wine-tasting evenings were held there along with a number of special pre-booked private functions as well.

So it’s with regret and a sense of loss that this familiar island landmark has now closed the door and the unique Tides Restaurant is no more and a public auction will be held to dispose of the contents this Saturday Morning from 10h00.

Yesterday morning an appreciative crowd witnessed six contesting finalists vying for the 2012 championship crown in 3 separate events.

Jenny Raymond triumphed over Noel Bell to capture the ladies singles crown, I.O. January secured the mens singles title over Johan de Bruyn and Ted Coetzee took the handicap singles title ahead of Fergie Ferguson.

Guest of honour and founder member of the club Alpha Visser presented the trophies to these worthy champions to much applause.

Earlier, Ian Ballantine and Johan de Bruyn also captured top honours in the nominated pairs championship over Rod Myburg and I.O. January.

Later, after prizegiving, the new varandah extension to the club was officially opened by Peter Thomas cutting the ribbon after an interesting introduction by Fergie Ferguson, current Chairman. The champagne corks then popped in celebration of this much appreciated open shelter facing the A green.

All in all... great day for the club!

During the following week the MIXED PAIRS championship final took place on the A Green between LEE  VAN DER WESTHUIZEN and her partner  ROGER WILLIAMS who triumphed over TEF HALLUM and PIETER DIJKSTRA. Well done to our new mixed champs!
